| UK Guardian: Is She For Real?Author Jon Ronson goes on a cruise with Sylvia Browne. Oct 27 2007 edition of Weekend BackgroundFrom time to time, Hay House (one of Browne's publishers) puts together a "Sylvia Browne Cruise" package. British author Jon Ronson recently attended one such cruise, and wrote an article about the experience. The ArticleOn October 27 of 2007, the front cover of the Weekend Magazine section of the UK Guardian newspaper showed a picture of Sylvia Browne with the caption "Sylvia Browne - Psychic or Fraud". Inside the magazine was the article linked to below. An online version of the article is available here: Is She For Real? I found the article to be a very interesting read, and I highly recommend it. But I wish to comment here on only one quote within it. Late in the article, Ronson interviews Browne. At one point in the interview, when she is talking about her critics, she says the following:
(Note: She is referring to James Randi, well-known investigator of paranormal claims and long-time critic of Browne.) AnalysisThe above quote brings up lots of questions, but the two which are most obvious are:
ConclusionIf Browne's "psychic claims" were true, she could prove them easily, showing her critics (such as James Randi and myself) to be totally wrong. But instead of doing so, or instead of intelligently addressing points raised by her critics, she resorts to name-calling and cowardly innuendo. And Ms. Browne, if you have any information which can be used to "hang" me, I'd love to hear about it. It would certainly be news to me. My thanks to Mr. Ronson for writing the Guardian article, and to the editors of the Guardian for publishing it.
