Email: Sylvia Browne and the Campus Massacre

Did she predict a mass-murder on a campus this coming Halloween?

Background

I just received an email from an angry parent asking about a rumored prediction of Browne's.

This article details my research into the topic.

The Email

Here is the email:

Subject: [name of college] "prediction"
From: [name] <[email address]>

According to my daughter who is a senior at [name of college], Sylvia Browne "predicted" on "The Montel Show" yesterday (10/4/07) that there would be a MASS MURDER on campus, October 31st!!! How outrageous is this!! You know she is fake - but some crazy person just might do something to become"famous"!!! My daughter is very scared and plans to come home that day! Is is totally irresponsible to allow that type of "entertainment" on television. SHE NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!!

Thanks, [name]

Ms. [name]:

Thanks for writing.

This is apparently an "urban legend." I'm pretty certain that Browne did not make any such prediction.

First, her Montel Williams Show is on Wednesdays, and so was on the third, not the fourth of October.

Second, I watched the show this past Wednesday, and there was no such prediction made.

Third, that show was a repeat anyway from around a year ago.

Given all that, I was fairly convinced this was just an urban legend, but I did some searching on the web. Are you familiar with the web site www.Snopes.com? It is a great resource for checking out weird things you hear about to see if they are true.

According to the following article on Snopes:

http://snopes.com/horrors/madmen/campus.asp

... this Urban Legend has been going around since 1968, with versions of it cropping up off and on ever since. The name of the psychic changes, the name of the TV show changes, the name of the campus where the "massacre" is to happen changes... But it's all an Urban Legend with no basis in reality.

It sounds like someone at [name of college] decided to revive it, and is attaching [name of college] and Sylvia Browne to it.

There is the slight chance that some crazy person will take it on themself to make the supposed prediction come true, so, if it were my daughter, I'd tell her to come home, or at least stay off campus that day if she would feel safer.

But it does not appear to be in any way connected with Sylvia Browne.

Analysis

As with the recent article about an alleged prediction made by Browne about the Pomeroy-Mason bridge, this is yet another urban legend which someone has pinned on Browne.

Note: According to Snopes, this legend was associated with the following schools in 1998 alone: Scripps College (Claremont, CA), Quinnipiac College (Hamden, CT), University of Connecticut, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Miami (Miami, FL), Western Illinois University, University of Illinois, Indiana University, Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN), University of Iowa, University of Kansas, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Northern Michigan University, Hudson High School (Hudson, MI), Olivet College (Olivet, MI), Albion College (Albion, MI), Adrian College (Adrian, MI), Siena Heights University (Adrian, MI), Tecumseh High School (Tecumseh, MI), University of Minnesota, Minnesota State University, Ohio State University, Kent State University (Kent, OH), Bowling Green State University (Bowling Green, OH), University of Oklahoma, Penn State University, University of Wisconsin (Madison, WI), and University of Wisconsin (Whitewater, WI).

It has been associated with many other campuses before and since.

Conclusion

My thanks to the parent who notified me about this. I have put this article together rather quickly in order that it might be found by other concerned parents and students.
